With the COVID-19 pandemic shaking Canadian society, it’s no surprise that many Calgary business owners have suddenly become interested in learning how to effectively clean and disinfect every surface in their business. While we, of course, recommend working with a professional Calgary cleaner during these times, this article should give business owners who are unable to budget for professional cleaning services the knowledge they need to better keep their staff and clients safe.

Cleaning Surfaces and Hands doesn’t require any special materials or cleaning chemicals. In fact, coronavirus is effectively destroyed by regular soap and hot water. Use a rag to routinely clean off frequently touched surfaces in your business. We recommend cleaning high touch surfaces at least two or three times a day. Surfaces, such as desk and table tops, countertops, light switches, door handles, electronics, faucets, etc. should all be considered high touch.

Disinfect Surfaces using a 70% alcohol solution spray or wipe. We recommend sprays as a more environmentally friendly solution. Disinfected surfaces must remain damp from the alcohol spray for a minimum of 10 second to be considered effectively sanitized. Alcohol disinfection works particularly well for glass, tile, metal, and plastic surfaces, but it should be avoided on wood.

Soft Surfaces. Carpets, curtains, and other fabric materials all need to be disinfected. When possible, you may want to consider non-porous alternatives for these surfaces. For example, choose hard flooring, non-fabric window treatments, and wood or leather chairs or couches. For fabric and soft surfaces that cannot be replaced, launder the material if possible. When laundering fabrics, use the hottest water recommended by the manufacturer. If laundering is not feasible, spot clean with soap and hot water.

Electronics. Many contemporary businesses are reliant on electronic tools, including computers, phones, tablets, etc. All keyboards, computer mice, touch screens, and remotes should be considered high touch surfaces. If possible, you may wish to apply a wipeable cover to your electronics to help protect them during sanitization. When possible, check the manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning and disinfecting. If you can’t find clear instructions, turn the electronic off and unplug it. Use 70% alcohol solution sprays or wipes to sanitize the surface. Allow the surface to dry completely before plugging the electronic in and turning it back on.

During these challenging times, it’s vital that all Albertan business owners do their best to keep their team members and clients safe. That means effectively implementing social distancing, allowing employees to work from home when possible, and keeping surfaces impeccably clean.
