With the cold months of the year upon us, it is important to look after ourselves and properly prepare for the weather! In Canada, whenever temperatures drop significantly below the normal, it becomes more challenging to stay warm and safe. Risk of health effects such as windburn, hypothermia, and frostbite increase significantly when the temperature, including wind chill values, drops into the negative twenties.

Who is at Risk?

While anyone who isn’t properly prepared for the weather is at risk in the winter conditions, there are certain groups of people who may be in more danger. Outdoor workers, seniors, and those individuals with certain medical conditions are among those at a higher risk that need to be proactive about preparing for their venture outdoors.

What should I Wear to Keep Myself Warm?

In the winter, dressing in layers and wind/water resistant clothing is a great way to reduce your risk outdoors. A standard layering system includes a base, mid, and outer layer. The base layer is meant to wick away sweat from your body and provide some insulating properties. Synthetic fibres, such as polyester, are the best choice when it comes to the base layer. The mid layer, the second of the three layers, is meant to trap warmth close to your body. The outer layer is meant to protect your body and inner layers from the elements. This means the outer layer is wind resistant and either water resistant or proof.

Other Things to Keep in Mind

Know the weather conditions! Pay attention to the weather forecast and winter alerts in your area. Environment Canada issues winter alerts to warn you of possible risks while being outside on the colder days.

While it may be freezing outside, it is still possible to get sunburn on those rare sunny days in the winter months. Wearing sunscreen may still be needed and should not be overlooked by Calgarians spending time outside this winter.

If you are participating in winter activities outside, it is also a good idea to wear sunglasses as the snow may reflect the sunrays and hinder your sight on a sunny day.

Keep moving! This will help you keep warm while outside by keeping your blood flowing around your body. Sufficient blood flow means sufficient body heat, which is crucial to keeping warm!

At Strathcona cleaners we work endlessly to ensure our worker’s winter safety. If you have any questions regarding keeping warm, don’t hesitate to give us a call at 403-237-8355 and we would be happy to discuss the topic with you.
